Get to Know Chris

Christoper Wray
Christoper WrayMusical Director & Conductor

 Christopher began his musical training attending the William Appleby Music Centre in Doncaster studying the cello and tuba. He went on to read music at Trinity College of Music, graduating with a first class honours in Music Performance. At Trinity, Christopher studied singing with Laureen Livingstone, Linda Hirst and Helen Yorke. He was awarded the Vocal Department Silver Medal for his work within the department in his final year. He went on to studies for a MMus in performance at the Royal College of Music, specialising in 17th and 18th Century repertoire.

Christopher has sung professionally in major concert venues in and around London including the Royal Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, Southbank and the Barbican. He has performed as a bass-baritone soloist in much of the major choral repertoire including: Bach’s St. John Passion, Christmas Oratorio, B Minor Mass and Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, Acis and Galatea, Duruflé and Fauré Requiems and Purcell’s King Arthur and Fairy Queen.


Christopher began conducting whilst at college taking lessons from David Vinden and Peter Stark and taking part in masterclasses with Diego Masson and Peter Broadbent and tutoring from Simon Halsey and Neil Ferris. Chris is a committed educator and has worked as a Vocal Consultant to Merton Music Foundation and as an outreach worker for SingUp, Many Voices Foundation and as an advisory teacher for Greater London Local Authorities where his work involved training non-specialist teachers to deliver singing and music lessons. He is a passionate advocate of music in the South West London area and was the founder of Fulham Camerata, Fulham Children’s Choir and the Junior All Saints Singers. He is currently the Assistant Director of Music and Head of Preparatory Schools’ Music at Surbiton High School where he conducts 16 choirs a week!

He is regularly in demand as a chorus director, adjudicator and examiner and has worked at Morley College, Royal College of Music (Junior), Trinity Laban, North London Children’s Choir and the Dartington International Summer School. He is absolutely thrilled to be joining the team at Surrey Music as the musical director of the Surrey Rainbow Choir.
